September Around The House

✓ Wood Heating & Fireplace Maintenance

  • Restock wood heating accessories (e.g. fire starters, Fatwood kindling, fire logs).
  • Ensure utility lighters and long stick matches are easily accessible.
  • Consider purchasing a refillable, flexible utility lighter to save money and reduce waste.
  • Schedule a furnace or heating system inspection for efficiency and safety before cold weather.
  • Check chimney flues if you use a fireplace, stove or furnace; have them cleaned if needed.

✓ Air & Heating System Maintenance

  • Replace the air filter on central AC or forced hot air heating units (end of September).
  • Use a quality Filtrete filter manufactured by 3M, as cheap filters don’t effectively remove airborne particles.
  • Test thermostat to ensure proper functioning.

✓ Fire Safety Checks

  • Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms; replace batteries if needed.
  • Check fire extinguishers to ensure they are fully charged and easily accessible.
  • Inspect fire escapes and ladders to ensure clear access for emergencies.
  • Inspect and clean dryer vent to reduce fire risk and improve efficiency.

✓ Water Heater Maintenance

  • Drain, flush and refill hot water heater to remove sediment buildup and ensure efficient operation.

✓ Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Wash and disinfect kitchen and outdoor garbage cans; consider biodegradable liners for environmental friendliness.
  • If it’s an Indian Summer, enjoy a barbecue before cleaning, repairing and storing patio furniture.
  • If missed in spring, inspect crawl space or basement for leaks and cracks; seal cracks with spray foam and leaks with anti-hydro/water plug cement. Apply waterproof paint to damp walls.
  • Inspect siding for cracks or damage and seal gaps to prevent drafts and moisture.

✓ Home Security & Efficiency

  • Lubricate door locks and hinges using powdered graphite for smooth operation.
  • Clean and test sump pump; run the pump through a cycle to check float operation and prevent backflow.
  • Air out and clean the house before cold weather and holiday guests.
  • Replenish rodent control supplies (mouse traps, poison and non-toxic deterrents).
  • Check exterior lighting and replace faulty bulbs; install motion-sensing lights for improved security.
  • Use timer switches for exterior lighting or plug-in timers for indoor lighting to improve access, security, and reduce energy costs.
  • Visit Woodstock Hardware for a complete line of LED, energy-saving light bulbs.

✓ Emergency Preparedness

  • Review and update storm survival/emergency kits (batteries, water, first aid, etc.).

September In The Yard

✓ Lawn Care

  • Implement fall lawn care program.
  • Apply a second application of lime to improve soil pH and lawn color without speeding up growth.
  • Seed bare patches or areas that struggled during summer.
  • Grass-seeding season winds down by mid-month (seeding new lawn or patchy spots should be done by the 15th).
  • Use starter fertilizer to encourage root development.
  • Aerate and fertilize the lawn for strong roots during colder months.
  • Fertilize with slow-release fertilizer for healthy root growth through winter.
  • Mow the lawn regularly, but gradually raise the mower blade to leave grass taller before winter.
  • Water deeply but infrequently if dry, to encourage deeper roots.
  • Remove diseased, sick, or dead trees and shrubs.

✓ Fall Yard Maintenance

  • Rake fall leaves — consider getting a leaf blower for easier cleanup.
    • Battery-operated blowers are the standard for ease (no mixing gas and oil, or dragging extension cords).
    • Electric or small gasoline blowers are good for flower beds and around the house.
    • Backpack blowers are ideal for the toughest jobs.

✓ Wildlife Care

  • Keep bird feeders full and provide high-energy food like sunflower seeds and suet for birds during the cold months.
    • Be aware of bears and if you’re on a “route,” bring feeders in at night.
    • Visit Woodstock Hardware’s Wild Bird Seed & Feeder Department for supplies.
  • Provide fresh water for wildlife — use birdbaths or shallow containers for easy access.

September In The Garden

✓ Garden Care

  • Remove plant litter and dead-head old flowers for annuals and perennials that are starting to die.
  • Add compost, manure and mulch to garden beds to enrich the soil.
  • Work on a second season tending to late autumn vegetables like cabbage, peas, spinach, and Swiss chard.
  • Divide overcrowded perennials like irises and bulbs after they bloom.
  • Plant fall crops such as kale, spinach, lettuce and radishes for a late-season harvest.
  • Plan for fall plantings such as bulbs (tulips, daffodils) that need to be planted before the first frost.
  • Collect seeds from flowers or plants you want to save for next season.
  • Divide overgrown perennials like hostas, daylilies and irises and replant to promote healthier growth next year.
  • Prepare garden beds for fall by adding compost or organic matter to improve soil quality for next spring.

✓ Pruning & Pest Control

  • Prune trees and shrubs after late-summer growth to encourage healthy, strong growth.
  • Trim back overgrown branches to allow better airflow and reduce the risk of disease.
  • Water deeply newly planted trees and shrubs to help them establish roots before winter.
  • Inspect for pests like Japanese beetles, aphids and other insects. Use organic pest control methods if needed.

✓ Deadheading & Planting

  • Deadhead spent flowers to promote late-season blooms and improve the overall appearance of the garden.
  • Cut back perennials that have finished blooming (e.g. peonies, daylilies) to tidy up the garden.
  • Prepare garden beds for fall planting by adding compost or organic matter to enrich the soil.
  • Plant fall flowers like mums, asters or pansies for a pop of color as the weather cools.

✓ Harvesting

  • Check vegetable gardens and harvest any remaining crops (tomatoes, zucchini, beans, etc.).
