October Around The House

✓ System & Roof Maintenance

  • Check for leaks at the end of the month, then drain and turn off sprinkler systems.
  • Inspect roof shingles for damage or wear and replace them if needed before snow starts.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water flow during fall rains and prevent ice dams in winter.
  • Inspect driveway, walkways and steps for any cracks or damage — repair to prevent further deterioration from freeze-thaw cycles.

✓ Weatherproofing & Energy Efficiency

  • Check windows and doors for drafts and replace weatherstripping and  caulking to improve energy efficiency.
  • Fill holes and cracks with steel wool, wood filler or spray foam insulation to prevent pests and improve energy efficiency.

✓ Lawn & Garden Prep

  • Mow the lawn one last time (if needed) and leave grass a little longer for better root growth.
  • Rake fallen leaves regularly to prevent them from suffocating the lawn.
  • Trim back overgrown trees, bushes and hedges, especially near the house or windows.
  • Trim trees and shrubs away from the house to prevent damage during winter storms.
  • Drain and store garden hoses and outdoor watering equipment (nozzles, sprinklers) to prevent freezing and damage.

✓ Plumbing & Heating

  • Insulate exposed pipes in the attic, basement and exterior walls to prevent freezing.
  • Shut off outdoor faucets and drain any standing water to prevent pipe bursts.
  • Check for leaks in plumbing and repair before freezing weather.
  • Test sump pumps to ensure they’re functioning before fall rains.
  • Before using wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, make sure fire extinguishers are charged.
  • Inspect space heaters and heating devices to ensure they’re in good condition and used safely.

✓ Cleaning & Home Prep

  • Clean and remove window screens, repair any rips or holes, label by room and store.
  • Clean windows and storm windows before installation.
  • Deep clean carpets, using spot remover and pet stain remover as needed.
  • Check thermostats to ensure they work properly.
  • Clean and inspect dryer vents to reduce fire risks.

✓ Safety & Lighting

  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace batteries if needed.
  • Inspect exterior lighting and replace bulbs as needed.
  • Install motion-sensing lights and use timers to save energy and enhance security.
  • Test and replace batteries in essential emergency equipment (smoke detectors, flashlights etc.).

✓ Automobile Prep & Winterization

  • Prepare your automobile for winter by checking fluids, replacing winter tools (snow scraper, emergency shovel, lock deicer), and adding traction sand to the trunk or truck bed.

✓ Rodent Control & Pest Prevention

  • Put out or replenish rodent control products to keep mice and pests at bay.

October In The Yard

✓ Yard Cleanup & Maintenance

  • Remove debris from around the perimeter of the house and sheds.
  • Trim trees or shrubs that touch the house and garage.
  • Rake leaves to prevent smothering new grass and to make spring cleanup easier.
  • Drain and store lawn and garden watering hoses — coil them up into an unused garbage can.
  • Cover wood pile using two smaller tarps for easier access.
  • Split kindling and begin storing it for winter.

✓ Equipment & Outdoor Furniture

  • Prepare lawnmowers and equipment by draining fuel, cleaning and storing them for winter.
  • Protect outdoor furniture by storing it or covering it with waterproof covers.
  • Check outdoor lighting and replace bulbs as needed to prepare for shorter days.

✓ Outdoor Comfort & Heating

  • Install outdoor heating elements like space heaters or fire pits to extend outdoor time during cooler evenings.

✓ Landscaping & Mulching

  • Weed landscaping beds to remove invasive plants that could compete with fall plantings.
  • Mulch landscaping with 2–3 inches to keep soil moist and protect plant roots in cooler temperatures. Keep mulch away from plant stems to prevent rot.

✓ Wildlife Care

  • Keep bird feeders full — provide high-energy food like sunflower seeds and suet to help birds survive the cold months. Bring feeders in at night if near a “bear route”.
  • Provide fresh water for wildlife using birdbaths or shallow containers.

October In The Garden

✓ Garden Tasks & Planting

  • Harvest the last of the vegetables and prepare the garden for winter.
  • Plant early spring bulbs (tulips, daffodils) and fertilize established bulb beds.
  • Plant herb baskets and force any bulbs for holiday gift ideas.
  • Prune raspberries, blackberries and blueberries — remove old growth and dead canes. Compost pruned material away from the garden.
  • Harvest seeds for next year’s garden and check out the International Seed Saving Institute for guidance.
  • Move tender perennials into the house, garage or greenhouse for winter protection.

✓ Garden Maintenance

  • Remove and store garden hoses in a safe place to prevent freezing.
  • Weed garden beds thoroughly — remove any invasive plants before they reseed next spring.
  • Apply mulch (2–3 inches) to garden beds to protect plant roots from the cold and conserve moisture.
  • Mulch around perennials and shrubs for extra protection against freezing.
  • Plant fall-blooming plants (asters, mums, kale) for color during cooler months.
  • Deadhead spent flowers on perennials and annuals to tidy up the garden and prevent seed production.
  • Cut back perennials that have finished flowering, but leave some for winter interest (e.g., ornamental grasses).
  • Remove fallen leaves, fruit or vegetables to discourage pests and rot.

✓ Fall Preparation

  • Divide perennials (e.g, hostas, daylilies) to encourage better growth in spring.
  • Start planning your spring garden by reviewing what worked and what didn’t this season.
  • Avoid pruning spring-blooming plants (like lilacs or magnolias) until after they bloom next year.

✓ Tools & Structures

  • Clean garden tools before storing them for winter, ensuring they’re rust-free.
  • Protect garden structures (trellises, fences, plant cages) by storing them or covering them for the winter.
  • Check your greenhouse for any damage and prepare it for the colder months.
