Painting Projects

    • Still have an interior project? Open the windows and paint the kitchen, a bedroom, or living room.
    • July is a great month for exterior painting — of course avoid painting in the rain or on hot sun-exposed surfaces.

Garage & Tool Organization

✓ Clean out the garage — discard or donate old junk.

✓ Consider painting your garage floor for easier cleaning.

✓ Organize your tools and garden equipment.

✓ Replace any broken or unsafe tools.

Safe Disposal & Septic Maintenance

  • Dispose of toxic materials responsibly:
    • Old paint
    • Solvents
    • Chemicals
  • Never pour toxic items down the drain or in the trash.
  • Contact Ulster County’s Resource Recovery Agency for hazardous waste collection schedules.
  • If you have a septic system, schedule a tank pump-out (every 5–8 years depending on use).

Home Cooling & Ventilation

✓ Change or clean HVAC air filters to keep AC efficient.

✓ Ensure ceiling fans spin counterclockwise for proper cooling.

✓ Clean vents, fans and AC units to remove dust and buildup.

Exterior Home Maintenance

✓ Inspect:

    • Siding, decks and fences for sun damage or peeling paint.
    • Roof for missing shingles or debris after storms.

✓ Power wash outdoor surfaces (patios, walkways, decks).

✓ Reseal wood decks if the finish is wearing.

✓ Check and clear gutters and downspouts.

Yard & Garden Care

✓ Water deeply but less frequently — early morning is best.

✓ Watch for pests (ants, wasps, mosquitoes) and treat early.

✓ Trim fast-growing shrubs and overhanging branches.

Safety Checks

✓ Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

✓ Check and recharge/replace fire extinguishers if needed.

✓ Clean kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans.

Indoor Cleaning & Moisture Control

✓ Deep clean high-traffic areas like entryways and mudrooms.

✓ Watch for humidity issues indoors — use a dehumidifier if necessary.

July In The Yard

✓ Driveway & Fence Maintenance

  • Patch your driveway or fill potholes with gravel because unattended damage will worsen.
  • July is a good time to apply a coat of driveway sealer.
  • Check fences and gates for damage:
    • Repair or replace broken sections.
    • Ensure pool fences and gates are secure.
    • Be mindful of fawns slipping through gaps in fences.

✓ Japanese Beetle & Pest Control

  • Grubs have pupated into Japanese beetles — take action now.
  • Use:
    • Japanese beetle traps (place away from gardens, not directly in them).
    • Beetle sprays (organic options available).
  • Monitor for other pests:
    • Aphids
    • Spider mites
    • Ants
    • Ticks
    • Mosquitoes
  • Apply insect repellents and treat problem areas with organic solutions as needed.

✓ Lawn & Garden Care

  • Mow regularly, keeping grass 3–4 inches high to retain moisture.
  • Watch for dry spots and ensure irrigation systems are working efficiently.
  • Apply a slow-release summer fertilizer if needed.
  • Weed garden beds and lawn areas regularly.
  • Check lawn edges and pathways for overgrowth and trim back.
  • Watch for invasive weeds in grass and flower beds.

✓ Plant & Flower Maintenance

  • Deadhead spent flowers (like petunias and geraniums) to encourage more blooms.
  • Prune dead or diseased branches from trees and shrubs for health and shape.
  • Monitor for signs of pests or diseases and treat promptly.
  • Harvest early vegetables (peas, lettuce, herbs) to promote continuous growth.

July In The Garden

✓ Enjoy Your Garden

  • Take time to enjoy the hard work you’ve put in — perennials are blooming and vegetables are producing.
  • July is focused on garden maintenance.

✓ Watering & Irrigation

  • Ensure plants are getting enough water, especially during dry spells.
  • Consider using:
    • Drip irrigation
    • Soaker hoses
These help avoid wetting leaves and prevent fungal diseases.

✓ Weeding & Mulching

  • Weeds may have benefitted from watering and fertilizing — it’s likely time for thorough weeding.
  • Weed garden beds regularly, especially after rain.
  • Apply a fresh layer of mulch (2–3 inches) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Keep mulch away from plant stems to prevent rot.

✓ Deadheading & Pruning

  • Deadhead annuals and perennials (e.g. petunias, geraniums) to encourage blooming.
  • Trim back spent flower stems while leaving enough for regrowth.
  • Prune any dead or diseased foliage.

✓ Pest & Disease Monitoring

  • Watch for pests like:
    • Aphids
    • Spider mites
    • Caterpillars
    • Beetles
  • Use organic treatments like insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
  • Inspect plants regularly for disease signs (e.g. yellowing leaves) and treat accordingly.

✓ Harvesting & Plant Management

  • Continue to harvest ripened vegetables and fruits (tomatoes, zucchini, beans, etc.).
  • Remove overripe or damaged fruit to prevent attracting pests.
  • Thin overcrowded plants to allow better air flow and growth.

✓ Fertilizing

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer to heavy-feeding plants, if needed.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing. It can cause excess foliage growth with fewer blooms or fruit.

✓ Staking & Supporting Plants

  • Stake or support tall plants (e.g. tomatoes, sunflowers, peonies) to prevent them from falling.
  • Check ties and supports to ensure they aren’t damaging the plant stems.
